Jimmy Owens breaks winless streak Lake Cumberland; Thornton tops Farmer City 74

Thornton Increases LOLMDS Lead with Farmer City 74 Triumph

MOUNT AIRY, N.C. (05/12/25) – It was a banner weekend for Koehler Motorsports as the multi-car team claimed a pair of victories in two different states. Ricky Thornton Jr. captured a Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win at Illinois’ Farmer City Raceway, while veteran Jimmy Owens broke a long winless streak with a Schaeffer’s Spring Nationals triumph at Kentucky’s Lake Cumberland Speedway.

For Owens, the $10,053 payday in Saturday’s Johnny Wheeler Memorial ended a 15-month winless drought, dating back to his last victory on February 8, 2024, at the now-shuttered East Bay Raceway Park.

Thornton, meanwhile, executed a late-race pass on Brandon Sheppard to win the Farmer City 74, securing back-to-back victories in the event, which also served as Round 4 of the 2025 Illinois Speedweek.

“This was a huge weekend for our team,” said team owner Bobby Koehler. “Having both drivers pick up wins is a testament to the strength and depth of Koehler Motorsports right now. Everyone on this team has been putting in the work, and results like these make it all worth it. We’re excited to carry this momentum forward in the weeks to come.”

Thornton’s five-race Illinois Speedweek campaign was highlighted by a $25,000 victory on Friday at Farmer City Raceway, along with a pair of runner-up finishes—in Tuesday’s opener at the newly reopened LaSalle Speedway and Thursday’s event at Lincoln Speedway.

While Thornton extended his lead atop the LOLMDS standings, Owens kicked off the Schaeffer’s Spring Nationals weekend with a third-place finish at Rockcastle Speedway before capturing the $10,053 victory in Saturday’s finale at the 3/8-mile Kentucky oval.
