Thornton takes on Chili Bowl and LOLMDS' Super Bowl of Racing

Ricky Thornton Jr.’s busy week across two divisions kicked off on Monday in the Reinbold/Underwood Motorsports No 19R Midget at the Tulsa (OK) Expo Center.

Taking on the O’Reilly Race of Champions on Monday night, Thornton rolled to a consistent 15th-place finish as he transitioned to the Midget ranks.

For his Chili Bowl Nationals preliminary night on Tuesday, Ricky raced into a qualifier by improving one spot in his heat to finish second. After losing ground in his qualifier and his B-Main, Thornton rebounded with a strong 24th-to-12th run in Tuesday’s 25-lap A-Main.

In the Koehler Motorsports No. 20RT Late Model on Thursday, Thornton joined 43 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) entries at Golden Isles Speedway (Brunswick, Ga.) for the opening round of the rain-shortened Super Bowl of Racing. Squeezing into the $12,000-to-win feature via the final transfer spot in his consolation race, Ricky settled with a 22nd-place finish at the checkers.

With the remainder of the Super Bowl of Racing cancelled by inclement weather, Ricky returned to Tulsa on Saturday for one last shot at the Chili Bowl Nationals main event. Rolling off 10th in his C-Main later Saturday evening, Thornton’s bid for his first Golden Driller ended with a sixth-place outing in his consolation.
